Race Description

The 8th Annual Kids Tri! Ballantyne is all about fun! Kids 6-14 years old will complete a pool swim, outdoor bike (NEW COURSE!) and outdoor run (NEW COURSE!) and celebrate their accomplishment with great food and entertainment along with post race photos with their favorite Mascots. Distances vary by age group. Our Kids Tri! is a great opportunity for kids who like to swim, bike, walk and run to be introduced to the fun variety and many health benefits of multisport training and racing. Kids who participate in the Morrison YMCA Triathlon Camp this Summer (click here for more details) will be able to put their triathlon camp skills into action and have a boost of confidence when they cross the finish line. This event has sold out in the past so don’t wait to register your child!

Our NEW Preschool Kids Tri! was a huge success last year and we are thrilled to offer this mini multisport event for these 3-5 year olds again. Preschool Kids Tri! will take place at 12:00pm* and the Kids Tri! for 6-14 year olds will start at 1:00pm.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
Swim:
  • 3-5 year old 25 yd swim – parent help permitted
  • 6-8 year old 50 yd swim
  • 9-11 year old 100yd swim
  • 12-14 year old 150yd swim

Each participant will be assigned a number based on their swim time within their age group. They will then line up according to their race number – #1, 2, 3, etc. This is a staggered start race where participants will “snake” under the lane lines to swim one way in each lane. The oldest age group launches first at lane #6 departing one at a time every 15 seconds. They continue swimming one-way for all of the six lanes before exiting at the pool steps. Age Group 9-11 will line up at lane #4 and will continue swimming one-way down four lanes of the pool before exiting at the steps. Age group 6-8 will launch at lane #2 and will continue swimming one-way down two lanes of the pool before exiting at the steps. Race officials and volunteers will line up each participant and start them accordingly. Any child may use a kick board to assist them in the swim.

The preschool age group launches after the last 6-8 year old participant. This preschool “fun tri” includes a ~10 yard swim, one loop around the lot, and a dash to the finish line.

Transition Area:
The participants exit the pool via the gate, run along the flags and into the parking lot transition area. In the transition area, participants put on their shoes, helmet and bib number. Bikes will be stationed by age group. Participants must push their bike to the designated mounting area before riding onto the course. Volunteers are in place to help children in need. No parents are allowed in the transition area unless they are designated volunteers. To volunteer, contact morrisonvolunteers@ymcacharlotte.org. Please be courteous to transition area volunteers and participants who are still racing. Once your child’s age group has completely finished the race, volunteers will direct you to safely enter the transition area in order to collect your belongings without impacting the safety of our other racers.

Bike:
All participants bike 3/4 mile loop one time. (EXCEPT PRESCHOOL GROUP)
The bike course is a one loop course through the YMCA and Hawkridge Elementary School.

Run:

  • 3-5 year old Dash to the Finish Line
  • 6-8 year old 1/2 mile run
  • 9-11 year old 3/4 mile run
  • 12-14 year old 1 mile run

The run takes place on the track near the finish line. Each lap of the track is a quarter mile. Age group 6-8 year olds will run 2 laps, 9-11 year olds run 3 laps, and 12-14 year olds run 4 laps. Preschool age group runs from the transition area to the finish line.

Participant Meeting

Participant Orientation Meetings are tentatively scheduled for Thursday July 13 at 6:00pm (last names A-L) and 6:45pm (last names M-Z) at the Morrison Family YMCA. Orientations will be divided by event – Tri!, Preschool Kids Tri! and Kids Tri! and will cover pre-race FAQs, course review and USAT safety guidelines. Helmet checks will be available on site. Meet at sand volleyball courts outside of Morrison Family YMCA.

Timing/Awards

All finishers will receive a participant ribbon and post race refreshments.
Special Awards will be given to the top 3 boys and top 3 girls for each age group.

  • Preschool division is not timed but all participants will receive finisher ribbons

Swim Time Information

All participants must submit a 50 yard swim time for seeding purposes. Any swim time changes can be made by e-mailing benji@jonesracingcompany.com. No changes will be made after July 13.
Being a pool swim with a staggered start, participants are seeded from fastest to slowest with in their age group.

The preschool age group will swim approximately 10 yards. Parents are allowed to assist their Preschool child. Floaties and kickboards are allowed for Preschool kids only. No times are needed to submit for the 3-5 year olds.

FAQ

  • 1. What do I do when I get to the race site?
    Go to the registration tables near the main entrance of the YMCA. Make sure you fill out all of the registration forms and get your race bag and number. From there you can get instructions on how to go set up your bike and further information about the race course.
  • 2. What should my child wear to race?
    We recommend a swim suit plus a shirt or race belt to pin your number to. Skip the socks and wear easy to put on Velcro running shoes or sneakers with elastic laces. Remember the goal is for the child to do the race under their own power with their own skill. They will only be empowered if they can do it themselves AND THEY WANT TO- EVEN if it takes a minute or to put on the shoes, or shirt or belt. Volunteers are on hand to help children if they need it but we try to let the child do it as much as possible.
  • 3. Where do I buy a race belt and what is it?
    We will have a limited amount of race belts on hand provided by Jones Racing Company for $7.00 at packet pick-up. A race belt is a simple way to wear your race number without having to pin it to a shirt. It has a clip that snaps simply around the participant’s waist and makes it a breeze to move through transition.
  • 4. Where do I set up my bike? And what do I leave with my bike?
    After checking in, head to the Transition Area and look for the area marked with your age group. Please place your bike, helmet, shoes, bib & towel in the correct age group. Take your goggles and swim cap (optional) with you to the pool. Before heading to the pool, stop by the marking area where your number will be marked on your arms and legs. Please make sure you are in the picnic area by the pool deck at least 20 minutes prior to the start of the race. DO NOT enter the pool through the racing chutes. Access will be through the gated entrance only.
  • 5. What is the order of events?
    Swim to bike to run. In our triathlon you complete the swim and then run to the Transition Area where you will put on your helmet, shoes, shirt and /or race belt with number. No bike riding in the transition area. Please push your bike to the designated mounting area before riding. The designated dismount area will be located outside the Transition Area upon your return from the bike course. Walk your bike back to your Transition Area spot and run to the track for your final leg of the race. Volunteers will be on hand to supply you with lap bands to assist in tracking your laps.
  • 6. Where should I stand to watch my child race?
    Spectator can view the swim portion of the race from the Wade Pool Area. No parents are allowed inside the Main Pool Area. The exception is if preschool participants need a parent with them. Only one adult is allowed to assist. Exit the Wade Pool Area via the regular exit gate and proceed to the spectator area between the Transition Area and the Track. At no time may you cross the course at random. There will be designated crossing points and viewing points clearly marked for your viewing. It is a safety concern for people to cross the course at random or be on the race course at any time. Please help us put on a safe race.
  • 7. Why can’t I stay with my child and follow them the whole race?
    This is by far the most difficult thing to enforce for you want to see your child throughout the whole race. We want you to be able to see them too, safely. Please listen when we say it is a huge safety concern and liability to have you in the race course at any time. Learning from experience when parents are in the course with their child they tend to neglect any other children that may be on the course. Please cross only at designated crossing spots and watch from designated viewing areas. If you must get closer please consider volunteering for ALL of the participants. Thank you.
  • 8. Why not volunteer?
    You would like to be closer to the race scene, why not help us out! We need many people to run this race smoothly. The more people involved the better. Please sign up for volunteering.
Event Description

A fun new addition to our Tri! Ballantyne weekend! Pre school children ages 3-5 years will now have the opportunity to be introduced to the sport of triathlon during our “for fun” multisport event. Parents can assist their child and kickboards are allowed during the 1 length of the pool swim (approx. 10 yards). Kids must bring their own bicycle/tricycle and helmet.

Each child will receive a participation award. LIMITED TO 50 PARTICIPANTS

Policies and Refunds

REFUND POLICY: No refunds will processed for this event. Entries CANNOT be transferred or deferred to another person, event, or year. NO EXCEPTIONS will be made to this policy. By registering for this event you agree to this refund policy.

WEATHER POLICY: In the event of inclement the following procedures will be followed:

The event will be postponed until 8:45AM in hopes the inclement weather will pass.
If inclement weather does not pass by 8:45AM , the event will be changed to a duathlon format.

Every effort will be made to have this event on time on this date. Should this event be cancelled due to an Act of God or other circumstance beyond the race directors control there will be no refunds, credits, or transfers.
